Connections and optional message translation are being introduced gradually and may not yet be available for every account or installed app version.
Translation in ULMOX is powered by Google Translate.
How it works
- Translation is optional. Nothing is translated unless you ask for it, one message at a time. Nothing is translated until you choose Translate with Google on a message you have received.
- Translating a message happens on this device. The message and the translation are not sent anywhere to be translated.
- A language pack has to be downloaded before a language can be translated. ULMOX asks first, and downloads over Wi-Fi unless you choose otherwise.
- ULMOX does not keep the translation. It is not saved as a separate message on our servers, and it is not attached to a report, a notification, moderation evidence or analytics.
What uses the network
Google's translation component can still use the network by itself: to download language packs, to read its own remote configuration, and to report diagnostics and usage analytics about the component. Your message text is not part of that.
We do not claim that nothing ever leaves your device. What we can say is what the message itself does: the text you received and the translation of it are handled on your device, and ULMOX does not send either of them anywhere to be translated.
Accuracy
Machine translation can be wrong, and it can be wrong while reading as though it were certain.
Between two languages where neither is English, the translation may pass through English on the way, and the result can be noticeably weaker.
The original message is the one that counts. It stays on screen, and it is the only thing a report ever refers to.
Reporting, blocking and moderation
Translating a message changes nothing about reporting, blocking, moderation or account decisions. A report always carries the original message, and a person reviews that original — never the translation.
A translation is not a moderation decision. It cannot make a message that was blocked or held deliverable, and no account is ever banned because of what a translation produced. Only an authorised ULMOX administrator can ban an account, and only after human review. See Child Safety Standards.
Managing downloaded language packs
You can see and delete downloaded language packs in Translation models, in the app. Removing ULMOX removes them too, in the ordinary way your operating system removes an app's files.
